🔪 First Fictional Diary: Brutus

To give you a glimpse of what’s in store when you sign up to the newsletter, here’s the first fictional diary from none other than Brutus, the assassin of Julius Caesar:

March 15, 44 BCE.

The weight of this night presses upon me like the weight of the world itself. The deed is done. Julius Caesar, the mighty ruler of Rome, my closest friend, lies slain at our hands. The Senate House, once a symbol of democracy, is now a chamber of conspiracy and bloodshed.

As I sit in my dimly lit room, the flickering candles casting eerie shadows upon the walls, I cannot help but reflect on the events of this fateful day. The air was thick with tension as we gathered in the Senate, each of us knowing that we were about to alter the course of history. The conspirators, Cassius, Casca, Decius, and the others, all shared a look of determination and fear in equal measure.

When Caesar entered the Senate, he was surrounded by his loyal followers, senators who had pledged their allegiance to him. I watched his every move, the way he strode confidently, the crown of laurels upon his head, a symbol of his arrogance and ambition. The man who had declared himself dictator for life, the man who would have made himself a king.

As the meeting began, my heart pounded in my chest, and my palms grew sweaty. Cassius had urged me to take this course of action, to rid Rome of a potential tyrant. I knew that I had to do what was best for the Republic, no matter the personal cost.

When the moment came, Caesar being slashed and stabbed countless times by the circling conspirators’ knives, looking toward me as his only hope, I approached him, a friend’s dagger concealed within my toga. The words of our cause, “For the good of Rome,” echoed in my mind as I plunged the blade into his flesh, the last one that would find its mark. The look of betrayal in Caesar’s eyes will haunt me until my dying day.

Chaos erupted in the Senate House as his loyalists cried out in shock and anger. We made our escape, the weight of our actions sinking in with every step. The city is in turmoil, and I fear what the future may hold. Civil war may be inevitable, but I pray that our actions will ultimately save Rome from the grip of tyranny.

As I sit here in the darkness, I cannot help but wonder if we have made the right choice. Did we truly do what was best for Rome, or have we condemned ourselves to a future of unrest and uncertainty? Only time will tell, and I can only hope that history will judge us kindly.

But for now, I must live with the knowledge that I am a murderer, a traitor to a friend, and a conspirator in a plot that may shape the destiny of Rome for generations to come. The weight of this night will never truly be lifted from my soul.
